The
Santa Clara Valley was once known as "The Valley of Hearts
Delight" due to the hundreds of orchards that once gave the
valley a garden of Eden-like atmosphere. This post card from the
1940s offers a glimpse of what Mountain View's countryside looked
like during this era. Mountain View was once surrounded by a
sea of orchards. During the spring time, buss loads of tourists
would drive down El Camino Real and other local roads to view the
endless spread of blossoming trees. The memory of our city's
orchards remains strong in the mind of those who lived here before
the 1960s. Today, urbanization has claimed all but one of Mountain
View's orchards.
