Mayfield
Mall, located at the intersection of Central Expressway and San
Antonio Road, was one of the first indoor malls in the country, and
the first in the Bay Area. The popular mall was located right near
the Palo Alto border, and was named after Mayfield, a city which
once existed between Mountain View and Palo Alto. The JC Penney's
stores in Downtown Palo Alto and Mountain View closed and a new
store was opened here. Other stores included Cost Plus World Market
and Woolworths, as well as many small unique locally owned
stores.
The
Mall was shut down in 1984 after owners felt it could not compete
with newer or expanding malls like Vallco and San Antonio Center.
The building was converted into an HP office building. HP is
vacating the building in the near future, and the future development
of the property has yet to be determined.
